Viewership habits are ever-evolving, and Alphonso’s newest report is here to help you the latest in TV and OTT audience behavior. The TV Audience Index uses Alphonso’s footprint of over 15 million U.S. smart TV households to drive insights into audience trends over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cable news has seen major sustained gains in viewership, with a record-breaking second quarter as audiences look to stay informed through the pandemic and widespread protests in the U.S. As of the end of June, cable news viewership has remained up 8% over the pre-COVID average.

Cable sports, on the other hand, has seen an inverse effect. The cancellation or postponement of major sports in the U.S. has led to lost audiences for sports networks, and replacement programming such as Korean Baseball has struggled to make up the difference. ESPN’s The Last Dance drove a major bump in late April, nearing pre-pandemic viewership levels. June showed an uptick with live golf and racing having returned, and MLB and NBA action on the horizon may drive sustained increases.
